Mirrored Canvas

Expressions as Art: Turning Emotions into Visual Stories

Overview

This project transforms fleeting facial expressions—like smiles, raised eyebrows, or jaw drops—into visual art. Inspired by the interplay between a mirror and canvas, it bridges emotions, facial expressions, and self-expression in a new, abstract way. Participants delve into their facial expressions and associated emotions in front of the canvas, witnessing them transformed into dynamic art. The experience creates a tangible connection to their inner selves and sparking moments of introspection and creativity.

How Does It Work?

The system captures and transforms facial expressions into visual art through real-time tracking and interactive rendering, using FaceOSC and Processing for their precision and responsiveness.

  1. Facial Tracking
A webcam feeds facial data into FaceOSC, which maps key expressions such as smiles, raised eyebrows, and jaw drops. Each gesture is identified and converted into actionable input.
  2. Emotion Mapping
Mapped expressions are assigned specific outputs. For instance:some text
    • Smile: Displays a photo of a joyful memory.
    • Shock: Generates abstract, reactive visuals.
  3. Visual Rendering
Using Processing, the system translates input data into dynamic visuals. These visuals are crafted to evolve based on participants’ movements, ensuring a seamless interaction between emotion and output.
  4. Projection Display
A projector casts the visuals onto a translucent acrylic sheet, creating an ethereal display where participants' emotions are mirrored back as vibrant, ever-changing abstractions.

This system seamlessly integrates hardware and software, reimagining self-expression as an interactive, artistic experience.

This exhibit appeals to:
  • Artists and creatives exploring facial recognition and interactive art.
  • Individuals seeking introspective, interactive experiences.
  • Those embracing a playful, childlike curiosity.
Key Learnings
  • Facial Expressions as Art: Showcasing their fleeting yet impactful role as a medium.
  • Technical Exploration: Using FaceOSC, Processing, and projection mapping for real-time interaction.
  • Rapid Prototyping: Iterative problem-solving within a one-week development timeline.

This project transforms facial expressions into a medium for artistic and emotional self-discovery, demonstrating how coding can be both creative and fun.
