EVERYTHING IS DATA

Transforming raw information into AI-driven prototypes.

This course explores how raw data can be transformed into interactive, AI-powered experiences through rapid prototyping, storytelling, and hands-on experimentation.

ABOUT THIS COURSE

As AI tools become embedded in creative workflows, designers increasingly need to understand how information is structured, interpreted, and experienced. Data is no longer only analytical — it can also be narrative, visual, and interactive. This course introduces data as a creative material and AI as a collaborative design tool for transforming information into meaningful experiences. Participants will explore how to use AI not simply to generate outputs, but to investigate ideas, prototype systems, and develop interactive concepts. Through experimentation and hands-on making, students build practical and critical skills that are increasingly relevant across design, technology, and creative industries.

This 5-day intensive course explores how data and AI can support creative research, storytelling, and rapid prototyping. Through hands-on exercises and collaborative experimentation, students investigate what data can represent and how information can be structured into meaningful narratives, visualizations, and interactive experiences.

The course begins with examples and short exercises that challenge conventional understandings of data and help students rethink what can be considered an “input.” Students then explore the concept of a “data totem,” identifying and organizing relevant data points around a topic of their choice. Building on these principles, participants experiment with different ways of communicating information through visualizations, interactive interfaces, dashboards, and AI-powered experiences.

Throughout the week, students use tools such as Claude and no-code/low-code platforms to rapidly iterate on ideas and experiment with simple agents and workflows. The course concludes with presentations of final prototypes and concepts.

INNOVATION IMPACT for industry participants

Participants will develop practical skills in prototyping with AI, data storytelling, and rapid concept development that are increasingly valuable across creative and technology-driven industries. The course strengthens the ability to translate complex information into engaging user experiences, work collaboratively with AI tools, and quickly test ideas through interactive prototypes. Students leave with hands-on experience using emerging workflows that support innovation, research, communication, and product thinking across design, media, strategy, and digital product development.

FACULTY

Chris Downs

Chris is a pioneer of Service Design and a leader in the application of emerging technologies to real-world product and service challenges. In 2001, he co-founded Live|work, the world’s first Service Design company, helping to establish a discipline that has reshaped industries and public services alike. Since then, he has continued to push the boundaries of design - as a founder and innovation leader working at the intersection of data, AI, and systems thinking.

Chris was the co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer of Normally, an Applied AI design studio that helped organisations including Apple, IKEA, Panasonic, and the BBC turn data into products, platforms, and services with lasting impact.

A passionate advocate for design education, Chris was part of the founding team behind the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, is a visiting lecturer on the Imperial College Business School MBA programme, and has served as an external examiner at the Glasgow School of Art.

Iskra Uscumlic

Iskra Uscumlic is an interaction and service designer with expertise in transforming complex data into clear and useful experiences. She focuses on bridging human needs with system realities, creating services that are not only life-centered but also sustainable and scalable. Her practice spans co-creation workshops, user research, and strategy development, working with diverse communities to design services that truly make an impact.
