HONOURS

Beginner Hour

Loneliness can make it difficult to reach out to others, even when the desire for connection is there. At the same time, communities are places where people gather around shared interests, experiences, and challenges. Yet the bridge between the two is not always easy to cross alone.

Beginner Hour addresses the growing epidemic of loneliness among young adults in Italy by transforming Orobia Climbing Gym into a supportive social microcosmos, a place where the act of climbing becomes an entry point into genuine human connection.

The inspiration came from the biological phenomenon of tandem running in ants. When a leading ant discovers a valuable resource, it does not simply race ahead. Instead, it slows its pace, guiding a follower ant along the best route, adjusting its speed to ensure the other keeps up. It is a small act, but a profound one, knowledge and belonging passed from one to another through patience and presence.

Taking this principle into the gym, the intervention is built around three elements: Beginner Hours which are dedicated time where newcomers, after their initial class, can enter the space with the company of volunteers that are going to show the installations and start showing one of the beginners routes so the person can start climbing.  Color-coded bracelets make it easy to identify who is new and who is ready to guide, removing the awkwardness of not knowing how to ask for help or offer it. And community incentives, like discounts in shoes, food, to reward connection itself,  encouraging members to invest not just in their own progress, but also creating a network where the people thrive together.

Together, these elements turn a physical challenge into a shared journey. At Orobia, the wall is not just something to climb, it is something to climb together.
