
"Bird Balcony" is a birdfeeder that combines a resting place, drinking spot, and food reservoir in one. To increase interaction between birds and humans, the idea behind "Bird Balcony" is to place it onto a balcony railing. The brief was to create a bird feeder while exploring shapes and different materials for each part of the artifact, made across the various workshops available at CIID.
The red wave forms the heart of the artifact, providing space for both; food and water for the birds. It is a 3D-printed part designed in Autodesk Fusion. In contrast to the red wave, two transparent triangular parts are cut out with a laser cutter. These sit on both sides of the red wave and build a contrast in shape and color – they have a straight and artificial shape with decent transparent material. The pattern on the triangles is inspired by nature: a strongly abstracted rendering of a leaf, photographed under a microscope in the biolab, then laser-carved into the transparent acrylic shapes and filled with red paint.
To support the bird feeder and secure it to the railing, three wooden planks were added. They are straight but rounded at the edges, providing a neutral transition between the artificial triangles and the organic waves. These planks were cut, carved, and sanded in the woodshop, and also serve as a resting place for birds on both sides of the feeder.
Altogether, "Bird Balcony" brings people and birds closer together, creating a shared space for interaction.
