HONOURS

Bird Bath & Feeder

The team was tasked with creating a bird feeder by combining elements of 3D printing, laser cutting and biomimicry.

They designed 3D models to learn the fundamentals of 3D printing and explored how to create materials using the laser cutting machine (including experimenting with creating a pliable wooden cylinder as the seed dispenser).

The structure and the design were inspired by patterns that they observed in nature (i.e. they engraved the texture and pattern of a leaf into the wooden lid of the dispenser) to attract birds to stop to eat seeds, drink water, and cool down in the bird bath.

With additional time, the team would continue to make it a more cohesive structure so that it can hang sturdily in a tree and withstand the elements.
