Sketch Tales is a bedside storytelling lamp designed for children aged 7–10, aimed at sparking imagination, joy, and a sense of wonder. The interaction is simple and playful: a child places a hand-drawn sketch onto the lamp’s platform, and the device interprets the drawing to generate and narrate a unique bedtime story inspired by it.
The experience blends creativity with storytelling. As the story unfolds through audio narration, integrated LED lights respond dynamically, enhancing the mood and bringing the child’s imagination to life. This combination of sound and light transforms a simple drawing into an engaging, multisensory narrative experience.
The system is powered by an Arduino Uno, operating on a Linux-based setup and programmed using both C++ and Python. The Arduino manages the interaction flow and connects to a cloud-based interface. Once a sketch is placed, it is processed through a cloud server, where multiple AI models (Claude and Open AI) interpret the image, converts it into text, and generates a story. This text is then transformed into audio (eleven labs) using a speech synthesis system and played through the lamp’s speaker.
By merging physical interaction with digital intelligence, Sketch Tales encourages children to actively participate in storytelling rather than passively consuming it. The product not only entertains but also nurtures creativity, imagination, and emotional engagement, making bedtime a more magical and personalised experience.
