Transitions

Transitions is an immersive experience that combines technology, digital visualization, and sound to evoke the cyclical nature of the seasons. The team members, both from Costa Rica, reflected on the physical and emotional sensations of encountering seasonal change while living in Italy; an experience that contrasted strongly with their tropical background.

The experience begins by inviting the audience to reflect on a base question: Which emotions or memories does each season evoke for you? Through a live performance, each season is then activated in sequence, revealing coded animations and soundscapes while the audience is encouraged to pause and reflect on their personal associations with each transition.

For the team, each season was interpreted as follows

• Autumn: change, transition, reflection of what has passed, nostalgia, harvesting what you have sown and preparing for what is to come.
• Winter: rest, renewal, sadness, loneliness, adulthood, and allowing the seeds of new life to be planted for a future spring.
• Spring: new beginnings, rebirth, opportunity, blossoming, innocence, excitement, exploration, learning, and the start something new.
• Summer: peak growth, fullness, exuberance, high energy, productivity, creation, and enjoying the fruits of one’s labor.

Through the development of Transitions, the team engaged with programming from scratch, learning to merge physical performance with digital systems. The process also opened an artistic approach to coding, where software became a medium for expression rather than solely a technical tool. One of the key learnings was discovering how performance, computation, and embodied experience can be woven together to create emotionally resonant interactive work.
