Inspired by the shape and bright colour of burgers, Anke and Sarah set off to design a bird feeder that uses elements shaped like components of a burger. Shaped like buns, the 3D printed roof and food container sandwich a piece of tomato slice-like perch that was laser-cut in bright red acrylic.
Hanging off the bottom of the burger, an additional small container carved in wood lets us deposit a different type of feed.
As each element was to be stacked on top of each other and connected from one central point, the Anke and Sarah’s main challenge was to make sure the central ‘column’ provided both adequate spacing between each component, as well as some stability.
The outcome was still a somewhat wobbly bird feeder as they did not fix the pieces of aluminium tubes that make up the central column.
Sarah and Anke particularly enjoyed designing the hanging wooden container. Though small in scale, this element of the birdburger gave them the opportunity to use 9 different tools and power tools from the CIID’s woodshop. On its bottom, we laser-engraved the image of dandelion seed under a microscope.
The end outcome is a delicate and light birdfeeder that sways with the wind and the weight of its visitors.
